Washington Nationals’ lineup for the first-half finale with the San Francisco Giants…

Washington and San Francisco wrap up their series and the first half in today’s 4:05 PM matchup in Oracle Park.

Looking for positives from Saturday’s sloppy 10-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, skipper Davey Martinez said afterwards that the Washington Nationals did not play a good game, but they did stay in the and fight till the end of the second game of three in Oracle Park this weekend.

“We didn’t play very good today, all around,” Martinez said. “But as you can see, we didn’t give in. We scored some runs late, they fought to the end. But I want to come out tomorrow you know, and go 1-0 tomorrow and leave the first half on a good note and win tomorrow.”

Martinez’s club scored three of their four runs in the seventh, and added one in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough, and they suffered their third straight loss with one to go in the “first-half” of the 2021 campaign.

They went on a serious run in June, finishing the month 19-9, but injuries have hit the roster hard, and it hasn’t gone well so far in a 2-8 July, in which they’ve dropped four straight with the Los Angeles Dodgers in D.C., split a four-game set in San Diego, and now dropped two of three to the Giants in San Francisco.

“I mean, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, I think when you’re a little shorthanded it’s tough to kind of compete each and every day with a shortened bench, shortened lineup, and pitching staff as well,” Trea Turner said after a 1 for 4, BB, game on Saturday.

“It’s part of the game,” Turner added. “Everybody’s got to deal with it, it seems like it’s hit us pretty hard lately. But we got some young guys in here now, [catchers] Tres [Barrera] and [Jakson] Reetz, and they’re putting good at bats together so we just got to keep playing, keep competing, and try to enjoy it, try to have some fun.

“I know it’s not fun seeing guys go down left and right, but we got to keep a good mindset going forward.”

Turner, as his manager has said before him, told reporters that the All-Star break is coming at a good time for the team, so hopefully they can get back some injured players and make a run in the second-half.

“I think we got the guys in the clubhouse to do it, we’ve got the mentality and you know, the toughness, I guess you could say, but it’s tough when you’ve got to deal with a lot of injuries at one time. So, I think the break will be good for us physically and mentally, and hopefully we can get a win tomorrow and kind of take a break on a good note, and then come back refreshed and hopefully get some guys back and kind of get back to what we were doing 2-3 weeks ago, and that was playing good baseball.”
