Orioles minor league recap 7/12: Alexander Wells pitches six shutout innings

The farm teams went 0-4 yesterday, but not because of anything Alexander Wells did.

Futures Game: National League 8, American League 0

The Orioles had two players representing their organization in yesterday’s Futures Game, which saw the American League get shut out. One player you would expect: mega catching prospect Adley Rutschman. The other, pitcher Marcos Diplán, is more of a mystery.

Rutschman batted cleanup for the AL team but didn’t make much of a difference. He flew out in his first at-bat and walked in his second. He was then pulled from the game to let another prospect get into the game. He did hit a 468 foot home run during batting practice that was mildly impressive.

Diplán came into the game with two outs in the fifth inning and struck out Heliot Ramos to end the inning. Things didn’t go so well for him in the sixth as he gave up back-to-back home runs before being pulled from the game.

Triple-A: Durham Bulls (TBR) 1, Norfolk Tides 0

It was a loss in the books for the Tides, but it featured an encouraging start from starting pitcher Alexander Wells (#17 prospect). Wells needed just 68 pitches to get through six shutout innings against the Bulls. He gave up just two hits and struck out six. This is the second solid start from Wells since he was demoted for his short stint with the Orioles on June 30th.

The Tides had just three hits in the game, including a double from Rylan Bannon (#20). Yusniel Diaz’s (#8) troubles continue with an 0-for-3. His batting average is now down to .167. Internet favorite Jahmai Jones (#16) also was hitless.

The only run of the game scored on a home run given up by Shawn Armstrong.

Double-A: Richmond Flying Squirrels (SFG) 12, Bowie Baysox 5

The Baysox had to play without their star player as Adley Rutschman traveled to Colorado to play in the Futures Game. They surely missed him, but it’s unlikely he could have made for for the team’s seven-run deficit in the game.

Starting pitcher Ofelky Peralta had a very rough go of it, giving up seven runs in just 3.2 innings. That won’t be good for the ol’ ERA. Peralta walked three and gave up seven hits, including two doubles and a home run.

On offense, it was a big night for shortstop Cadyn Grenier. Grenier hit his fifth home run of the season along with a single and two walks. He scored four of the Baysox five runs. Kyle Stowers (#22) also had two hits and a walk. His OPS is now up to .968.

High-A: Greenville Drive (BOS) 8, Aberdeen Ironbirds 2

It was another poorly pitched game down on the farm. Starter Kevin Magee did ok, with one run allowed in three innings. But Easton Lucas (4 runs in 1 inning) and Kade Strowd (3 runs in 2 innings) didn’t do so well.

Aberdeen somehow only got two runs despite racking up 10 hits in the game. At the top of the order, Adam Hall (#11) had three singles. Jordan Westburg (#6) also had two hits, while Gunnar Henderson (#5) went hitless with a walk. Both runs scored on home runs, one each from Shayne Fontana and Christopher Burgess.

Low-A: Salem Red Sox 10, Delmarva Shorebirds 0

It was a brutal game for Delmarva pitchers, who gave up 10 runs on 18 hits. Starter Zach Peek gave up two runs in three innings, then poor Leonardo Rodriguez gave up three runs without recording an out. Shoutout to Gregori Vasquez, the only Shorebirds pitcher out of five who did not allow a run.

Delmarva’s offense was no-hit for six innings until TT Bowens kicked off the seventh with a double. It was the team’s only hit in the game.
