Starters Michael Baumann and Kyle Brnovich led Bowie to a pair of wins over Erie yesterday while the rest of the Orioles’ affiliates suffered losses.
Triple-A: Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) 6, Norfolk Tides 5
In a hard-fought contest against the Redbirds, Norfolk lost by a single run. Starter Kyle Bradish had a rough go of it, allowing five earned runs in the second inning and exiting before he could register the final out of the frame. His ERA is up to 5.65 on the year.
Down 5-2 after the second inning, Norfolk chipped away at the Redbirds’ lead with a run in the third on a solo homer by Zach Jarrett. The Tides got two more in the fifth, on a double steal of second base and home, and an RBI single by Jarrett. With the score tied 5-5 in the sixth, reliever Shawn Armstrong allowed the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly and took the loss.
Zach Jarrett finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Jahmai Jones was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk, and Tyler Nevin was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Double-A: Game 1 – Bowie Baysox 6, Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) 2
The Baysox did their scoring in threes last night and held the SeaWolves to a pair of runs in a 6-2 victory. In the top of the third, Bowie got a two-run homer from Doran Turchin and an RBI single from Robert Neustrom. In the top of the fifth, Neustrom struck again with an RBI single, and Johnny Rizer had a two-run single.
Michael Baumann earned the win for Bowie after allowing two runs over six innings. He gave up four hits (including one home run) and two walks while striking out eight SeaWolves.
As far as top prospect news, Adley Rutschman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a strikeout.
Game 2 – Bowie Baysox 1, Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) 0
The Baysox pitched a shutout in game 2 to sweep their doubleheader against the SeaWolves. Starter Kyle Brnovich set the tone for Bowie by allowing just one hit and one walk over the course of five innings. Relievers Steven Klimek and Felix Bautista pitched in a scoreless inning each, with the former getting the win and the latter getting the save.
Johnny Rizer provided all the offense for Bowie with a solo home run — his fourth of the year — in the seventh inning. After a stellar game 1, Robert Neustrom went 1-for-3 with a double in game 2. Adley Rutschman went 0-for-3 to drop his batting average to .274. Kyle Stowers went 1-for-3 to leave his batting average at .297.
High-A: Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) 20, Aberdeen IronBirds 2
Last night was brutal for the IronBirds, who got obliterated by a run differential of 18. Hickory even had a no-hitter going until the seventh inning, when Jordan Westburg doubled and Andrew Daschbach hit a two-run home run to account for Aberdeen’s only hits.
Conner Loeprich started the game for the IronBirds and surrendered seven runs on 10 hits in just 1.2 innings. He left the mound with a 37.80 ERA. The rest of the damage against Aberdeen pitching went like this: Shelton Perkins, four runs allowed; Easton Lucas, three runs; and Kade Strowd, six runs. Clayton McGinness was the only IronBirds pitcher who didn’t allow a run, as he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings at the end.
Low-A: Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) 6, Delmarva Shorebirds 3
It was scoreless between the Wood Ducks and the Shorebirds for five and a half innings last night before a flurry of runs by both teams in the latter part of the game. Down East scored a total of four runs off of Delmarva reliever Adam Stauffer — who took the loss — in the sixth and seventh. Then Gregori Vasquez pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game and allowed two more runs.
Starting pitcher Noah Denoyer did very well for Delmarva, tossing five scoreless innings with three hits, zero walks, and five strikeouts. His ERA for the year is now 2.85.
At the plate, all of Delmarva’s offense came via solo home run. The power was provided by right fielder Cristopher Cespedes (1-for-4), second baseman Andrew Martinez (1-for-3), and first baseman TT Bowens (2-for-4). But the Shorebirds were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.
