Sunday’s 7-5 loss in 10 innings to the Chicago White Sox hurt on so many levels. First, not only was it a series sweep, it was the Baltimore Orioles fourth loss in a row; not the way the team wanted to go into the 2021 All-Star break. Secondly, Ryan Mountcastle left the game after being hit in the left forearm by a Dylan Cease pitch. Third, and most frustrating, was the fact that Trey Mancini “Magic” was wasted.
As Geoff Arnold said on the radio broadcast, “Mancini started the Homerun Derby early” when he hit a two out pinch hit homerun in the ninth inning that tied the game at 4 and sent it to extras.
Sadly, manager Brandon Hyde left Tyler Wells (2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R (2 earned), 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR allowed to Adam Engel) one batter too many and the Orioles lost the game.
Spenser Watkins made his second start of the season and lasted 4.1 innings. The right-hander allowed 1 run (on an Andrew Vaughn 4th inning homer) on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4 before turning the game over to the Orioles bullpen.
The game started off on a positive note with a Cedric Mullins (1 for 3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB) bunt single followed by an Austin Hays (1 for 4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB) homerun. Defensively, Hays cut down Yoan Moncada at third for an inning-ending double play in the first inning and Watkins picked off Engel in the second inning.
The Orioles were unable to mount any kind of threat until Ryan McKenna’s (1 for 2, 1 R, 2 BB) ninth inning single that preceded Mancini’s homerun.
