The Orioles lost again, Adley is working to get out of his slump, and more in today’s Bird Droppings
Happy Tuesday, Camden Chatters. Yesterday was another dismal day in Birdland, where the Red Sox destroyed the Orioles by a score of 12-3. Of the six pitchers used, only Gregory Soto kept runs off his ledger. He did allow two inherited runners to score, so no great kudos. The Red Sox hit four home runs in the game as part of their 15 hits as a team. It was ugly. So ugly.
Not ugly was the return of the multi-hit game from Adley Rutschman. He singled and doubled in the game and reached on an error on a ball he pretty hard at Rafael Devers. Anthony Santander also had a good game as he knocked in all three runs the Orioles scored. He knocked in one on a single, he took a bases-loaded walk, and oh yeah, hit his 40th home run of the season. It was a beaut. 103.8 mph off the bat, 407 feet, out in 29 of 30 ballparks.

You’re not going to win many games when you give up 12 runs, but you’re also not going to win many games when you go 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leave 11 batters on base.
It’s taken me quite a while, but I think I am finally coming to the idea that these Orioles aren’t very good. They’re going to make the playoffs, but how can you feel any confidence about that with the way they have been playing lately? It’s incredibly discouraging.
I have felt discouraged before only to have those feelings change just like that when the Orioles put together a good run. But they haven’t had a good run in so long I don’t know how to picture that right now.

Birthdays and History
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have three Orioles birthday buddies. Mike Baumann turns 29 years old today. Baumann played for the Orioles from 2021 through this year when he was traded to the Mariners. Since then he has played for the Mariners, Giants, Angels, and Marlins. He’s currently on the Marlins active roster.
Matt Angle (39) and Danys Báez (47) are also celebrating today. Angle’s entire Major League career took place in 2011 with the Orioles. Báez appeared in 112 games for the Orioles as a relief pitcher in 2007 and 2009.
Non-Orioles with birthdays today are Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, future Hall of Famer Joey Votto, and Hall of Fame caliber husband Paul Folkemer. Happy birthday to them all!
On this day in 1964, the Orioles beat the Senators 12-5. The win softened the blow of Brooks Robinson hitting into his second career triple play. He’d hit two more before his career ended.
In 1965, the Orioles swept a doubleheader against the Kansas City Athletics. In the second game Brooks Robinson, Curt Blefary, and Jerry Adair hit back-to-back-to-back home runs.
One year ago today, the Orioles lost to the Red Sox, 7-3. Grayson Rodriguez gave up four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings. Ryan O’Hearn, Adley Rutschman, and Ramón Urías made errors. Aaron Hicks had an RBI single and Adam Frazier knocked in two with a triple.
