TBT, a yearly summer basketball tournament on ESPN, attracts many former NBA players and college basketball stars.
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is a single-elimination tournament played each summer at various regional sites across the United States and broadcast on ESPN. Teams are assembled by general managers who often build alumni teams from prominent colleges or by simply compiling the most talented rosters they can.
Players’ experience ranges from the Division III level to the NBA. Former NBA All-Star Joe Johnson competed in last year’s tournament. Several players in the field spent varying lengths of time as members of the Washington Wizards.
Trevor Booker, who spent 4 seasons with the Wizards, will be competing for PrimeTime Players in the West Virginia Regional. Booker averaged 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in 235 games for Washington. PrimeTime Players first game is on Sunday.
Glen Rice Jr., the MVP of the 2014 NBA Summer League, spent parts of two seasons with the Wizards. In 16 games for Washington, he averaged 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game. Rice Jr. played for Team DRC, which lost today in the first round. Rice Jr. had 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Former Villanova center Daniel Ochefu played 19 games for the Wizards during the 2016-2017 season. He averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in 3.9 minutes. Ochefu is competing for Team 23 and their first game is today at 5 p.m. on ESPN2.
Tarik Phillip signed a multi-year contract with the Wizards in April of 2019 but was waived in August before playing a game for the team. He did participate in 4 NBA Summer League games for Washington. Phillip, a West Virginia University alum, is playing for Best Virginia, a WVU alumni team. Best Virginia won their opening game today in nail-biting fashion and Phillip contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 points.
Jemerrio Jones was acquired by the Washington Wizards, along with Isaac Bonga, Moe Wagner and a 2022 2nd round pick (LAL own), from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for cash and multiple Traded Player Exceptions (TPE). He was waived in October of that year prior to playing a game for the Wizards. Jones is playing for Armored Athlete in this year’s TBT. Armored Athlete will play their first game on Sunday.
Jordan McRae is not playing in the event but is a booster for the Georgia Kingz for TBT 2021. McRae spent part of two seasons with the Wizards and another with the Capital City Go-Go. The Kingz will play Ochefu’s Team 23 at 5 p.m. today.
