Big 12 Conference Announces Update On Oklahoma, Texas

The Big 12 Conference has announced an update on Oklahoma and Texas following the week of speculation.

According to multiple reports, the Sooners and the Longhorns plan on leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. However, the move is far from finalized.

Sunday night, the Big 12 Conference announced that a meeting took place with Oklahoma and Texas.

“The Big 12 Conference Executive Committee, consisting of Big 12 Board of Directors chairman and Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec and Baylor University President Linda Livingstone; and Commissioner Bob Bowlsby met by videoconference Sunday afternoon with University of Oklahoma President Joe Harroz and University of Texas President Jay Hartzell,” the Big 12 announced.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said the talks were beneficial.

“The meeting was cordial, and the Executive Committee expressed a willingness to discuss proposals that would strengthen the Conference and be mutually beneficial to OU and UT, as well as the other member institutions of the Conference,” Bowlsby stated. “I expect that we will continue our conversations in the days ahead and we look forward to discussing thoughts, ideas and concepts that may be of shared interest and impact.”

It remains to be seen what the Big 12 can do to convince Oklahoma and Texas to stay. The conference could promise the two schools a bigger slice of the TV revenue, but that could lead to other schools looking elsewhere.

The Big 12’s best move is probably an attempt at securing commitments from non-Big 12 schools, like a BYU or Houston or Cincinnati, that could add value to the conference.

Stay tuned.
