While Belichick was previously firm in his resolve that returning starter Cam Newton would be the QB1 to start the season, it appears that confidence is starting to waver amidst some stellar preseason play from the No. 15 overall pick.
On Thursday morning, the Patriots head coach was asked when he needs to have the starting quarterback decision locked in.
“I don’t have a time table on that. Can’t tell you,” Belichick said, per NFL Network insider Michael Giardi.

After going 13/19 for 146 yards in New England’s 35-0 preseason win over the Eagles this weekend, Jones has put together an impressive week of practice.
With Newton out after missing a COVID-19 test earlier this week, the former Alabama quarterback has carried the vast majority of practice reps. And so far, Jones is making the most of this window of opportunity.
Mac Jones was a surgical 35 of 40 against the Giants defense in practice, including a stretch of 18 consecutive completions. Jones hit Jakobi Meyers for a 50-yard TD against double coverage in the final two-minute period. With temps approaching 90 degrees, it was an intense day.

Taking starting reps for the third day in a row during yesterday’s joint practice with the New York Giants, Jones wowed Belichick and his teammates — throwing 35/40 and completing 18 straight passes. To close out practice, the rookie QB led his team on a successful 80-yard two-minute drill capped off with a touchdown.
This performance earned a hive-five from the legendary New England head coach.
Newton is cleared to return to practice today and the quarterback battle will resume. But, Jones has certainly made up some ground in his absence.
