Weeks ago, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton came up with a nickname for rookie quarterback Mac Jones, dubbing him “Mac and Cheese”. But one analyst doesn’t seem to like Newton’s name choice.
Appearing on ESPN’s Keyshawn, JWill & Zubin, NFL analyst Bart Scott admonished Newton for giving Jones a “disrespectful” nickname. He accused Newton of “body shaming” Jones by giving him a name like that.
“That’s disrespectful, right? That brings up something totally different,” Scott said. “‘Mac and Cheese’ is like one of the most disrespectful nicknames that I’ve heard in a long time, and this dude thinks it’s a term of endearment. Like, I don’t know if somebody told him, he’s pretty much body shaming him.”
That seems like a bit of a stretch from Bart Scott here. Jones’s first name is Mac, and Mac & Cheese is a pretty easy name to come up with.
Cam Newton doesn’t go out of his way to insult his NFL peers. Any offense he may have caused Mac Jones by calling him “Mac & Cheese” is accidental at best.
Let’s not pretend that Newton puts a ton of working into coming up with the nicknames he gives to everyone in the first place.
Newton isn’t playing mind games with Jones here and he certainly isn’t trying to put him down.
All Newton is doing is trying to win the starting quarterback job. And right now it looks like it’s his to lose.
