USC isn’t the job it once was, but it should have a wide selection of some of the top options in the college football coaching world following the program’s firing of Clay Helton on Monday. A college football insider believes the Trojans are targeting one coach in particular.
We’ve already heard a few names USC is bound to have interest in. Some of them include Oregon’s Mario Cristobal, Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and of course Urban Meyer. But what about Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell? Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports thinks it’s a no-brainer.
Dodd reported Monday night just an hour or two after USC’s decision to part ways with Helton that the Trojans’ job is “Fickell’s to turn down.” In the event he elects to stick with the Bearcats, former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops could be in the mix.
Fickell, meanwhile, would be a home-run hire for USC. But luring him away from Cincinnati at this very moment could prove tough.

The big question is how quickly will USC work to replace Clay Helton? It may be smart to wait until this coming off-season.
The Trojans aren’t going to have a special season, anyways. They have too many roster flaws and already have a bad loss at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal. USC should probably take its time in finding Helton’s successor.
We’ll see if it winds up being Fickell.
