D.J. Uiagalelei Reveals 1 Major Lesson From Trevor Lawrence

July 26, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei throws a pass during a game against Notre Dame.

With Trevor Lawrence off to the NFL, D.J. Uiagelelei is the new man under center for the Clemson Tigers. But Lawrence didn’t leave Clemson before giving his successor some important lessons.

Appearing at the recent ACC Media Days, Uiagalelei praised Lawrence for helping him to become “a true professional” on and off the field. He highlighted how Lawrence was able to handle the media and going about in public in such a professional way.

“I think the one thing I’ll touch on is how to become a true professional of the game off the field,” Uiagalelei said, via 247Sports. “The way Trevor handled different things off the field, how he dealt with media, how he dealt going around town. He couldn’t be like himself, he had to uphold to a Clemson quarterback where he maybe couldn’t do the regular things that a college athlete or college student couldn’t do.”

Lawrence never lost a regular season game with the Tigers and led them to the College Football Playoff three times. He won a national title in 2018 and finished his college career third on the Clemson all-time passing list.

Replacing Trevor Lawrence will be a tough task, but D.J. Uiagalelei has the tools to take it up.

Coming out of high school in 2020, Uiagalelei was one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. As a true freshman, he appeared in nine games and started two, going 1-1 as a starter.

Uiagalelei would finish the season with 914 passing yards and five touchdowns with no picks and added four rushing touchdowns.

But if D.J. Uiagalelei really takes off in 2021, we can thank Trevor Lawrence for playing a role in his development.
