The college football landscape looks like it’s in for some pretty major changes over the coming days. With Texas and Oklahoma both reportedly on the verge of leaving the Big 12 to join the SEC, the balance of power in a couple of the nation’s biggest conference could be shifting as soon as next week.
The changes don’t stop there.
According to Jayhawks insider Mike Vernon, Kansas has a call set up with the Big 10 with plans to potentially leave the Big 12 as well. Horned Frogs insider Jeremy Clarke has also reported that TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech have all reached out to the Pac 12 about a possible move.
This could be the end of the Big 12 conference as we know it.
CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell took to Twitter to react to this news.
“Holy crap college football will never be the same….” Kanell wrote.

In order to join the SEC, 11 of the conference’s current 14 teams will need to approve the additions. Other conferences have reportedly reached out to Texas and Oklahoma, but both programs’ top preference is to make a move to the SEC. The Longhorns and Sooners have been in discussions with the conference dating back to December, per college football insider Brett McMurphy.
According to reports from Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, Texas and Oklahoma are prepared to wait until their Grant of Rights expires in 2025 to join the SEC, instead of paying a $70 million buyout fee. That being said, a complete disbandment of the Big 12 could certainly affect that wait.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
