ESPN Analyst: Mike McCarthy Will Be Fired If Cowboys Don’t Win Playoff Game

July 24, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy on Sunday against the Giants.

Coming off a 6-10 year in his first season with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s no secret that head coach Mike McCarthy is in some hot water.

Former NFL player and current analyst Ryan Clark took McCarthy’s precarious position to the next level on ESPN’s Get Up Friday, saying the longtime coach will need to enjoy postseason success if he wants to avoid getting the boot.

“If they don’t win the NFC East, if they don’t win a playoff game, Dan Quinn will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys,” the one-time Pro Bowl cornerback said. “This will be Mike McCarthy’s last year.”

The Cowboys hired McCarthy prior to the 2020 season in hopes that he could return to the Super Bowl-winning era of coaching he experienced with Green Bay in 2010. Unfortunately, severely hampered with injuries throughout the year, this past season looked more like the final stretches of his 13-year Packers career.

By firing former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan after the season, Clark believes McCarthy was deflecting the blame away from himself. With a solid defense and a new DC in Dan Quinn heading into this coming season, the second-year Dallas head coach has nowhere to hide now.

“When Mike McCarthy gets rid of Mike Nolan, he says to the world, ‘I was not the problem,’” Clark said. “We thought he was the problem in Green Bay. This is the reason you can’t win with Aaron Rodgers. Now, we give you the Dallas Cowboys, you said Mike Nolan was the issue. You have a defense now. If they don’t win the east, if they don’t win playoff games and advance, Mike McCarthy is out and Dan Quinn will be the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

As star quarterback Dak Prescott is set to return from last season’s devastating injury, McCarthy will look to hang onto his job with a much-improved season in 2021-22.
