Veteran defensive end Everson Griffen will make his return to the Minnesota Vikings after re-signing with his longtime team on Monday afternoon. However, he still has some answering to do for comments that he made about quarterback Kirk Cousins earlier this year.
In January of 2021, Griffen took to Twitter and made a series of tweets that bashed Cousins, whom he played with in 2018 and 2019. He called his former teammate “ass” and made other comments, questioning the Vikings decision to stick by the veteran quarterback.
Now that Griffen is headed back to Minnesota, he’s going to have to play with Cousins once again. Apparently, he’s already started to plan out how he’s going to apologize to his quarterback to try and bury the hatchet.
“I’m just going to talk to Kirk and apologize to him and have a man-to-man conversation and we’re going to leave it like that,” Griffen said, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

It’s unclear how Cousins will receive the apology, but for the Vikings sake, the two will need to patch things up quickly. Clearly Griffen’s old tweets didn’t dissuade head coach Mike Zimmer and the organization’s leadership from signing him, so they must think the relationship is savable, or at the very least professional.
Both players will be leaders for Minnesota this fall, so will surely be eager to put the past behind them.
Griffen played for the Vikings for a full decade from 2010 to 2019 before he opted out his contract during the 2020 offseason. He went first to the Dallas Cowboys, but was traded to the Detroit Lions in October.
After all of that movement, Griffen has landed back with his old team. Once he patches things up with Cousins, he’ll try to return to his Pro-Bowl form on the football field.
