One of the biggest storylines from Super Bowl LII was the New England Patriots’ decision to bench veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler.
Despite all of his success with the Patriots leading up to that matchup, Butler didn’t play a single snap against the Philadelphia Eagles. His absence from Super Bowl LII remains a mystery to this day.
Former Patriots linebacker James Harrison was asked about that mysterious benching during a recent interview. Even he doesn’t know why Butler was benched before the most important game of the season.
“I think that they just actually thought that he just didn’t have it,” Harrison said, via Patriots Wire. “I think that was a part of the process. All this stuff that came out, ‘Oh he was out there doing this. He was doing that.’ That’s a crock of s***. That’s not true.”
“I know for sure that all that stuff that was coming out about curfew and all that other (expletive) — that’s a crock of (expletive).” https://t.co/aSrIooYKgN

Harrison also debunked the myth that Butler was late to a team meeting before Super Bowl LII.
“It’s just not even close to true because that — like I don’t even know what happens if you’re late to a meeting. I’ve never seen a guy late to a meeting [in New England],” Harrison continued. “So for wild allegations of ‘it’s this, it’s that’ and you have not one ounce of proof. Come on, man, you all need to stop making up stories to sell papers and get clicks or whatever it is. It’s just bull.”
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told the media that Butler’s lack of playing time was simply a “coach’s decision.”
Maybe we’ll learn the real reason why Butler was benched in Super Bowl LII when Belichick retires.
