In order for the Philadelphia Eagles to exceed expectations this fall, second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts will need to play well.
Sure, first-year head coach Nick Sirianni hasn’t officially named Hurts the starter, but it would be a major stunner if he didn’t beat out Joe Flacco. If his reported performance at today’s joint practice with the New England Patriots is any indication, it won’t be long before Sirianni crowns Hurts his QB1.
According to Patriots beat writer Chris Mason and Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks, Hurts was the best quarterback on the field Monday morning, outplaying not only Flacco but his New England counterparts Cam Newton and Mac Jones.

Among the reported highlights were deep connections from Hurts to Quez Watkins and Jalen Reagor. For the day, Hurts finished 19-of-25 with one touchdown.
In Philly’s first preseason action over the weekend, the 2020 second-round pick was 3-of-7 passing for 54 yards.
“Yeah, I thought he handled it well,” Sirianni said of Hurts after the game, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “He made a really good check and great throw to Dallas [Goedert] for a big play. He saw what defense was coming and checked the play. A ton of credit to him for that and making a perfect throw there.
“I thought he went with where we wanted the ball to go vs. the defenses they were running. He had a couple drops in there, so I was really pleased with him.”
The Eagles will take on the Patriots in exhibition play this Thursday night.
