Kyle Shanahan Not Saying Much About Quarterback Plan

August 11, 2021 by The Spun

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch on the field.

No team in the NFL has a more fascinating quarterback situation than the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has two legitimate starting options, Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, at the most important position in the sport.

Several analysts and insiders have assumed that Garoppolo will start Week 1 for the 49ers, but that’s not a safe bet. Shanahan hasn’t even announced who will start the team’s preseason opener this Saturday.

When speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Shanahan said that he has no update on his quarterback situation.

Exhibition matches might not mean much for most teams, but this preseason is really important for San Francisco. The coaching staff could learn a lot about Lance during the preseason.

#49ers Kyle Shanahan post-practice:
No announcement on QBs for Saturday exhibition or if Garoppolo must play

Jalen Hurd didn’t practice because “some things were bothering him” and there is “not a lot of time left” to prove worthy of roster spot

If Lance lights it up in the preseason, Shanahan might have to seriously consider starting the rookie. His teammates are already calling him a “generational talent,” so it’s not like that would negatively affect the locker room.

Let’s also not forget that Shanahan previously admit that Lance will receive snaps this year. That doesn’t mean he’ll be the starter, but he’ll see the field in some capacity.

“Trey’s going to play for us this year,” Shanahan said. “I know you guys are all running to Twitter with that, but situationally he’s going to get plays. That doesn’t mean that he’s going to start or anything, but he’s going to get plays. You have to prepare him for that every way possible.”

We’ll learn more about the 49ers’ quarterback situation over the next few weeks.
