The Summer and Winter Olympics feature some of the best athletes in the world competing in all kinds of sports and games, and has been one of the most popular sporting events in the world for decades. But one former Olympian has a funny idea to make it even better.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, six-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman rehashed an old joke as a suggestion for improving the games. “Every Olympic event should include one average person competing for reference.”
Aly Raisman is hardly the first person to make such a suggestion. Comedians and pundits have (jokingly or not) been suggesting the idea for years, some even decades.
Nevertheless, it’s not the worst idea in the world. Raisman rose to prominence in women’s artistic gymnastics. It’d be pretty fun to see an average person try their hand at some of the performances she put on in her storied career.
Another other event where it’d be a lot more fun to see average people competing would be the 100-meter dash. The idea of a legend like Usain Bolt crossing the finish line and an average person crossing the finish line half a minute later is pretty hilarious.

Aly Raisman is finding no shortage of people who would indulge her idea. Some are even willing to volunteer for the experiment:
“I’ll volunteer for vault,” one fan replied. “It seems fun. But no way am I stepping on beam”
“I would do the swimming because I was a afraid of balance beam when I took gymnastics for a gym class in grammar school,” wrote another.
“I would do anything to see an average person run the hurdles in their own lane,” another fan replied.
It may be just a pipe dream, but it would definitely increase the entertainment value (and the ratings perhaps) a ton.
Get to it, IOC!
