Scott Frost is gearing up for an important fall at Nebraska after starting his tenure in Lincoln with a few disappointing seasons in a row. The Cornhuskers head coach has found himself squarely on the hot seat before the 2021 season has kicked off after winning just 12 games in his first three years at the helm.
Although Frost’s focus is firmly planted on the upcoming campaign, he still found some time to stir up some controversy with one of Nebraska’s Big Ten West rivals.
During an appearance at the conference’s Media Days last week, the Cornhuskers head coach was asked if his team had any slogan for the upcoming season. He quickly shot down that idea of “sloganeering”, saying that he didn’t want to have to use a motto to motivate his players to work harder.
“I’m not into sloganeering,” Frost said, via the Big Ten Network. “If the players need me to motivate them all the time or come up with a unique slogan to play harder, I probably don’t have the right players.
“I played for a coach at Nebraska in Coach Osborne … He didn’t need all the sayings and slogans. He just taught us the right way to do things, and we went to work. That’s what we need in our program.”
Minnesota players quickly caught wind of Frost’s comments and perceived the remarks as a targeted slight. Head coach P.J. Fleck brought his well-known “Row the Boat” slogan to Minneapolis when he was hired in 2017 and many speculated that Frost was pointing to the Golden Gophers with his media day comments.
Almost immediately, a handful of past and present Minnesota players responded to the Huskers head coach. Senior defensive back Coney Durr and former Minnesota cornerback Benjamin St. Juste both took to Twitter to air out their grievances with Frost’s possible dig.

It’s unclear if Frost actually meant to trash Minnesota, but at this point, it doesn’t matter what his intentions were. The Golden Gophers clearly will use what he said as fuel to try and knock off Nebraska this season.
Minnesota and Nebraska have gone toe-to-toe the last few seasons, splitting the last six contests that they’ve played, but the Golden Gophers have won the last two games by a combined 34 points. One program will gain an upper-hand when the two Big Ten rivals meet on Oct. 16 in Minneapolis.
