Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer has been scratched from his start tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. Though the team is ruling Scherzer out because of right triceps discomfort, there might be more going on here than meets the eye.
This weekend, MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that a blockbuster trade involving Scherzer is “quite possible” before Friday’s deadline.
“Max Scherzer is being discussed in potential trades, and while the Nats are investigating both buy/sell scenarios, they are seven games back and a Scherzer trade suddenly seems quite possible,” Heyman said. “He alone would transform thin starting pitcher market.”
Since the Nationals are willing to entertain trade offers for Scherzer, MLB fans believe the team is holding him out from Saturday’s start to prevent any potential injury.

In 18 starts this season, Scherzer has a 7-4 record with a 2.83 ERA and 142 strikeouts.
Any trade involving Scherzer before the deadline could change the landscape of the league. Even at 36 years old, the three-time Cy Young winner remains one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Scherzer is in the final year of his seven-year, $210 million contract. Teams interested in his services have to be OK with him potentially being a rental for the second half of the season.
