Of all the NFL’s Week 1 outcomes, none were more surprising than the Eagles‘ blowout win and Jalen Hurts‘ stellar performance.
Philadelphia obliterated the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sunday. Hurts, the former Alabama and Oklahoma star, completed 27 of his 35 pass attempts for 264 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 62 yards rushing on seven carries. Is he the NFL’s next dual-threat quarterback?
No one gave Hurts and the Eagles a chance to win many games this season. But now, some are readjusting their expectations for Philly.
Former NFL great Michael Irvin in particular thinks it’s about time fans start giving Hurts the respect he deserves.
“Can you put some respect on [Jalen Hurts’] name?! Put some ‘spect on that name!,” Irvin said during Monday’s edition of First Take.

We agree. It’s about time Jalen Hurts gets some respect.
Hurts replaced former star quarterback Carson Wentz late in the 2020 season. Some believed it to be a temporary replacement. Based on Hurts’ performance on Sunday though, the Eagles may have something special at quarterback.
Hurts’ work ethic and determination has never been put in question. But it’s worth noting scouts questioned his arm abilities coming out of college. He’s silenced his critics so far, though.
The Eagles could end up having a pretty special season if Hurts continues to play at a high level. Philly will try and move to 2-0 this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
