MLB World Reacts To The Padres’ Big Trade

July 26, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

San Diego Padres celebrate a big home run.

The San Diego Padres are going for it.

Sunday evening, the NL West contenders made the first huge move of the trade deadline. San Diego has acquired All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan was the first to report the move.

“The San Diego Padres are acquiring second baseman/outfielder Adam Frazier from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. Frazier, 29, leads baseball in hits this year and is not a free agent until after the 2022 season. One of the best bats on the trade market,” he reports.

Full return for Adam Frazier here from Kiley. Marcano is the main guy, but Jack* Suwinski is OPSing around .950 at AA and Miliano is a strikeout machine, with 59 in 30 innings between both Class A levels this season. https://t.co/oGtvSWSIEd

This is a big move for the Padres, who are currently in Wild Card position in the National League. They’re 5.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West.

San Diego has been very aggressive with trades over the past year-plus. The Padres are clearly going all-in for a run at the World Series.

The Padres now have both starting middle infielders from this month’s All-Star Game, and can now trot out a potential infield of:

1B Jake Cronenworth, All-Star
2B Adam Frazier, All-Star
SS Fernando Tatis Jr., All-Star
3B Manny Machado, All-Star

The Padres reportedly considered another big move, too. According to Buster Olney, San Diego considered a trade for All-Star shortstop Trevor Story.

The Padres continue to collect good players, believing they can thrive wherever they play them. Before this deal, they had talked internally about trading for Trevor Story and putting him in center field.

That would’ve been pretty wild – and it’s still possible.

The MLB trade deadline is set for Friday at 4 p.m. E.T. You can expect the Padres to continue to be aggressive on the market.
