Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is heading into his first year coaching in the NFL. But despite taking over for the team with 2020’s worst record, Meyer is confident he’ll turn the team around quickly.
Speaking to the media this week, Meyer made it clear that the 2021 season is all about acclimating start quarterback Trevor Lawrence to the NFL. He then boldly declared that he has a “one-year plan” to have the Jaguars in contention quickly.
“If he’s not the quarterback we think we can win with — we haven’t made that decision. It’s not a four-year plan, it’s not fair to these players. It’s a one-year plan,” Meyer said, via NFL.com.
Suffice it to say, NFL fans (or at least non-Jaguars fans) aren’t convinced. Many have taken to the comments section dismissing or outright ridiculing Meyer for making such a prediction.
The ego on this guy is unreasonable.

Unless they sign every free agent next year I don’t see that happening

😂 He really thinks he’s still in college. He’ll be out of the NFL by 2023

Quick turnarounds like the one Urban Meyer has in mind aren’t unheard of. Plenty of teams have gone from worst to first in no time at all thanks to a combination of coaching, drafting and savvy offseason moves.
That said, “one-year plans” are usually an exception, not the norm. Most of the franchises that have been where Meyer’s team is now have taken upwards of three years to get above .500, let alone contention for a title.
Maybe Urban Meyer does have the magic formula to get the Jaguars into contention quickly. He wouldn’t be the first head coach with no NFL experience to do that.
But planning for that to be the case is a potential recipe for disaster.
And Meyer should probably be ready if things don’t go his way.
