The Jacksonville Jaguars prepared to hand Trevor Lawrence the keys at quarterback after selecting him with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. However, the former Clemson star may not earn his new gig easily.
Rising third-year quarterback Gardner Minshew figures to factor into the Jaguars plan at quarterback, at least during the early stages of the 2021 season. As Lawrence continues to ramp up to the NFL game, the former sixth round pick may get one more shot to earn the starting job.
Minshew clearly doesn’t want to miss out on that opportunity and seems to be taking the competition between him and the rookie seriously. He spoke with former NFL defense lineman Chris about his mindset earlier this week and dished out a hilarious quote about his level of preparation.
“In preparation for the competition, I haven’t taken a s— in weeks. No. 2 isn’t an option for me,” Minshew told Long earlier this week on his Green Light with Chris Long podcast.
Needless to say, NFL fans and even former players loved Minshew’s quote for its absurdity.
QB1 in the NFL.
Mentally focused that he can hold in his bowels for weeks? I bet you Patrick Mahomes can’t do that. https://t.co/Q132JmsV6r

Minshew has possessed an undeniable flair since he came into the league in 2019 and his latest quote just adds to the mythology surrounding the former Washington State quarterback. He may not win the Jaguars job, but the 25-year-old is clearly going to work hard and joke around, no matter what.
Minshew still has plenty of potential, which he’s put on display over his last few years in Jacksonville. After an electric rookie year that saw him throw for 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 12 games, he took a small step back due to injuries in 2020. He still racked up 2,259 yards and 16 more scores last season, showing that he has upside as an NFL quarterback.
Even if he doesn’t beat out Lawrence in training camp, Minshew should still factor into the NFL in a major way. Whether that’s as a backup for the Jaguars or as a starter elsewhere, we’ve hardly heard the last of the man who won’t be No. 2.
