NFL World Reacts to Giants Owner’s Comments

August 18, 2021 by The Spun

A closeup of Giants co-owner John Mara.

Another week, another NFL owner making headlines. This time, John Mara of the New York Giants is in the news.

Mara lit the NFL world on fire on Tuesday for his comments surrounding players taunting and trash talking one another during games. The Giants’ owner is “sick and tired” of it, and wants to see more of an emphasis on on-field play.

“That’s something we discuss every year in the Competition Committee,” Mara said, via Pro Football Talk. “We get kind of sick and tired of the talking that does go on from time to time on the field. We tried to balance the sportsmanship with allowing the players to have fun and there’s always a fine line there, but none of us like to see that. It’s just a question of whether you can have rules that can be enforced and without taking the fun out of the game too, but nobody wants to see a player taunting another player. I know, I certainly don’t. I think the rest of the members of the Competition Committee feel the same way, too.”

You guessed it; Mara’s comments have gone viral. Plenty of fans have blasted the Giants’ owner for his controversial comments. Even Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu responded to Mara.

Take a look.

So shut up and play? Got it. https://t.co/9YrOmSIBup

John Mara is probably one of the very few people who don’t like taunting. If they are going to throw a flag every time a player shows emotion (which the preseason has proven they will do) the @NFL may soon challenge the @MLB for who can lose a younger generation of fans faster. https://t.co/WCNWZw8BVT

John Mara is the living embodiment of “Get off my lawn!” https://t.co/NqpQks53Lw

Alternative idea…what if John Mara stopped talking and let the players play. https://t.co/EF4BXsGyHJ

I cannot fathom wanting anything but an increase in both volume and quality of taunting in every sport. https://t.co/afaw6xgoSF

This is just dumb https://t.co/tlST0y3hsU

I promise we really look forward to the talking lol https://t.co/BF5e9bIPF7

John Mara may want to sit this one out.

The majority of sports fans love taunting and trash talking. It makes all sports great.

The last thing the NFL should do is to try and take it away.
