Before Monday night’s preseason game between the New Orleans Saints and the Jacksonville Jaguars got underway, Jameis Winston broke out another one of his unique warm-up routines. The 27-year-old conducted a strange set of arm circles to get prepared for the most important moment of his summer thus far.
Whatever Winston did during his warm-up paid off in a major way, because when he took the field against the Jaguars, he looked liked the Saints top quarterback.
Winston got the start for New Orleans on Monday night and didn’t waste a single second. He had a nearly perfect game, going 9-for-10 for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
The performance undoubtedly improved his stock in the quarterback battle against Taysom Hill and showed Sean Payton that he has what it takes to line up under center for the Saints in Week 1 of the regular season.
Much of Winston’s success on Monday came from his remarkable connection with Marquez Callaway. The two seemed to be on the same page all night and connected for both of the Saints first quarter scores. Callaway ended the game with five catches, 104 yards and touchdowns from 43 yards and 29 yards out.
Although Payton said before the game that he wouldn’t name the team’s Week 1 starter until just before the regular season kicked off, Winston’s showing on Monday might throw a wrench in the head coach’s timeline. Fans and media members were impressed with the former No. 1 overall pick’s performance and will surely be calling for him to get the Saints top gig soon enough, if they’re not already.

Jameis Winston is a 27 year old Heisman winning, former #1 overall pick. He’s one of only 8 quarterbacks in NFL *history* to throw for 5,000 yards in a season.
People gave up on Jameis way too early!

Hill turned in an admirable showing with the second unit on Monday night against the Jaguars. He came into the game for the Saints first drive of the second quarter and led the team to 10 more points before the end of the third period. His numbers didn’t quite match his teammate’s as he went 11-for-20 for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Winston definitely stole the show on Monday. If Payton deems his performance worthy, he might just steal the Saints starting quarterback job.
