Pistons Reportedly Considering 3 Players At No. 1 Overall

July 27, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

A general view of the Detroit Pistons arena.

The 2021 NBA Draft is only three days but the Detroit Pistons have known for months that they’ll be making the No. 1 overall pick. But ahead of Draft Night, the Pistons don’t appear to be totally dead-set on who they’re taking.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pistons are considering three prospects for that top spot. Per the report, they’re considering Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham, G-League shooting guard Jalen Green and USC center Evan Mobley for that top selection.

The Pistons are likely getting ready for a rebuild this summer after winning just 40 games over the last two seasons. Though they’ve elected to keep head coach Dwane Casey for a fourth season, they need to add a lot of talent to their ranks.

Whoever the Pistons take with that top overall pick will be a centerpiece of that rebuild. Fortunately, they have a lot of draft capital to help build around him.

Detroit’s internal meetings are still revolving around three players for the No. 1 pick on Thursday night — Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green and Evan Mobley, sources tell ESPN. Detroit isn’t fully there yet on committing to Cunningham with their first overall choice.

Cade Cunningham is considered the top prospect in the draft by a plurality of analysts. But it’s not like he doesn’t deserve the hype. In his one year at Oklahoma State, Cunningham averaged 20 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, earning tons of accolades in the process.

Much the same can be said of Evan Mobley, who averaged 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Trojans this year. He won almost every major Pac-12 accolade and was a consensus All-American.

Jalen Green chose to go pro right out of high school, joining the G-League Ignite on a $500,000 deal. He averaged 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in the developmental league. Green also won three gold medals representing the United States at various youth levels.

Who do you think the Pistons should take with the No. 1 overall pick?
