New QB following QB1’s injury

The Washington Football Team announced the signing of former Chiefs/Bengals QB Kyle Shurmur this morning. He went undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2019 and was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs during their Super Bowl season.

He spent time on the Bengals practice squad late last season, and was signed to a reserve/futures deal this year. Shurmur was released during the preseason cuts, and has remained a free agent since. He is also the son of former New Giants Head Coach and current Denver Broncos Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur.

Shurmur was signed after Ryan Fitzpatrick’s injury yesterday that was described as a hip subluxation. We have not heard the results from the MRI yet, but Ian Rapoport reports that he is expected to miss an extended amount of time. Ron Rivera will address the media today at 1pm, and there will likely be some injury updates/roster moves then.

Taylor Heinicke is expected to be the starter while Fitzpatrick is out. Kyle Allen will move into the #2 spot for the team again. Washington doesn’t need to add a 3rd QB to the 53-man roster since they only keep 2 active on GameDay and have former QB Logan Thomas as an emergency backup. That could still happen in order to fully protect their #3 QB if Fitzpatrick’s season is over.

With Washington Football Team QB Ryan Fitzpatrick set to miss extended time with a hip subluxation, WFT has signed Kyle Shurmur to the practice squad.

It is obvious at this point, but Nicki Jhabvala reports that Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t play on Thursday Night Football when Washington hosts the New York Giants.

Perhaps expected and obvious at this point, but Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) will not play Thursday night against the New York Giants, per source.

And Jeremy Fowler reports that Taylor Heinicke will get his first regular season start with Washington on Thursday night. This will be his 2nd NFL start, and his first since starting a game for the Carolina Panthers in 2018. Heinicke famously started Washington’s home playoff game last season against the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Taylor Heinicke is starting at QB for the Washington Football Team on Thursday night vs the Giants, per sources. No official determination on IR for Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) but he’ll be declared out for this game. Kyle Allen will be the No. 2.
