Recently-released Detroit Lions defensive back Alex Brown was reportedly charged on Monday for his involvement in a crash that injured two people, including one of his former teammates, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News.
Rogers reports that the local prosecutor’s office has charged Brown with two counts of operating a vehicle while under the influence causing serious injury and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injury.
Brown was reportedly intoxicated and driving at a high speed on the wrong side of Interstate 75, near I-375, at 2:13 a.m. Sunday morning when he struck on oncoming vehicle, per Rogers. The impact injured the other driver and Lions player Charlie Taumoepeau, who was a passenger in Brown’s car.
First responders cut out Taumoepeau with the Jaws of Life before he was transported to a local hospital with a neck injury. He was released by the Lions and will revert to injured reserve once he clears waivers.
Brown was also released by the Lions on Sunday. The team released a statement following news that he was charged on Monday.
“We are aware of the situation from Sunday morning involving Alex Brown. Alex was waived from the team Sunday afternoon and Charlie Taumoepeau is receiving proper medical care following injuries sustained from the incident,” the Lions said in a statement, per Rogers. “Driving under the influence is a matter we take very seriously. We, as an organization, extend our thoughts and support to the victim and his family during his recovery.”
Alex Brown, the cornerback the Lions cut this week, is being charged after a non-fatal car accident. He was allegedly intoxicated, driving on the wrong side of the freeway after 2 a.m on Aug. 15. Two people were hurt in the crash. Brown faces four charges.

Brown’s arraignment is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Brown, 24, signed with the Lions back in May as a free agent. He spent the previous two season with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he tallied two tackles and a quarterback hit in three games in 2019. He missed all of the 2020 campaign with a torn ACL.
