When the Seattle Seahawks traded two first-round picks and change for All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, most expected that a long-term extension with the former No. 6 overall pick would be reached quickly. Fast-forward a year later and that still hasn’t materialized.
Unfortunately for any Seahawks fans hoping for a deal between the team and Adams, they may not get their wish. According to ProFootballTalk, the Seahawks are “truly done negotiating” with their star safety.
Per the report, the Seahawks are content to let Adams play out his rookie contract – which ends after this year. After that, they plan to franchise tag him in 2022 and 2023.
Adams is slated to make just under $10 million this year. Tagging him next year will cost around $13.5 million, then over $16 million in 2023.
But Adams may not accept being tagged as a safety. PFT reported that Adams will challenge the designation and argue that he’s a linebacker. That would result in wildly different compensation.
The Seahawks currently plan to apply the franchise tag to safety Jamal Adams in 2022, barring a long-term deal. Per source, Adams would challenge the designation, arguing that he’s a linebacker. The financial difference is significant. https://t.co/0mnnA9Rb3I

Jamal Adams has been one of the best box safeties the NFL since entering the league. This past year he made his third straight Pro Bowl, setting records en route to 9.5 sacks.
But his coverage skills have been criticized for ages. Adams has just one career interception and had three pass breakups in 2020.
Jamal Adams may be the best safety in the NFL today (and if you don’t believe it, just ask him). But there’s clearly a disconnect between what he feels he’s worth and what the Seahawks feel he’s worth.
One way or another, Adams will become a very rich man. But that may not come from signing a long-term deal.
