There may not be a more talented quarterback room at the college level than the one Ryan Day is managing at Ohio State. Redshirt freshmen C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller and true freshman Kyle McCord was recently joined by Quinn Ewers, a five-star player who has opted to enroll early.
Strong and Miller were four-stars in the 2020 class. McCord is a five-star 2021 player, while Ewers jumped up from 2022 to 2021, taking over as the top player in the class.
Stroud is the clubhouse favorite to be the choice. McCord and Ewers may be the two most talented players on the roster, but they have less time with the program… much less when it comes to Ewers. Day isn’t ready to reveal his QB1 quite yet, but it could come very soon.
At Big Ten media days, the Ohio State head coach said that he wanted to announce his starter after two weeks of camp. That second week began Monday, and Day was asked about where things stand.
Ryan Day on the quarterback competition: “I think after this week, we’re going to have a really good feel.” Said it could take another week before Ohio State is ready to name a starting quarterback, but that Wednesday and Saturday will be big practice days for the QBs this week.

“We will kind of figure that out as we go and talk to the guys and go from there,” he added, via 247Sports. “Wednesday will be a big day and Saturday will be a big day. We will take Sunday off and come up for air. Maybe it will take another week after that, but we will see.
“We are kind of getting into 20 practices now when you include the spring. That is a pretty good body of work that we’re putting together day after day… Will we be ready next week? I don’t know. But it will be pretty close to that timetable.”
Plenty of coaches wait all the way up until Week 1 to make this call after a quarterback battle, even when the decisions are pretty clear. The Buckeyes open their 2021 season at Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 2.
