T.J. Watt Has Honest Response To Question About His Future With Steelers

July 25, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Bud Dupree celebrating with TJ Watt.

For the past few years, T.J. Watt has been on an extremely reasonable deal for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That’s going to change at some point in the future though.

Watt is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He’s set to make roughly $10 million this upcoming season.

Since training camp has officially begun for the Steelers this week, Watt was asked about his contract situation. The Wisconsin product made it clear that he didn’t consider holding out of camp.

“No, I love this team,” Watt told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I love all the coaches and the staff here and the players. I’m excited to be here and that’s what I’m here for.”

When asked when a new deal may get done, Watt said “That’s not for me to say.”

Although he didn’t give the media a clear picture as to when a deal may get done, it sounds like Watt is content with his current situation in Pittsburgh.

Watt has been sensational for the Steelers over the past few seasons. In 2020, he had 53 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t provide an update on the front office’s negotiations with Watt, but he did say “I’m sure that process will run its course and we’ll have something to report.”

The Steelers’ first preseason matchup will be on Aug. 5, as they’ll take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game.
