The United States is officially on the board at the Tokyo Olympics. The nation earned its first gold medal tonight–and also took home silver in the process.
American male swimmer Chase Kalisz did the honors, winning gold in the 400m individual medley final. He was followed up by teammate Jay Litherland.
Kalisz won with a time of 4:09.42. Litherland (4:10.28) narrowly edged out Australia’s Brendon Smith (4:10.38) for second place.

Kalisz previously won silver in the 400m individual medley at the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing behind teammate and legendary champion Michael Phelps.
Fittingly, Phelps is working for NBC as a commentator this time around, meaning he got to call the 1-2 American punch.
Phelps is so giddy that the Americans finished 1-2 in the men’s 400 IM.

After his win tonight, the 27-year-old Kalisz will also compete later this week in the 200m individual medley.
