The Minnesota Vikings had one of the top rushing attacks in 2020 thanks in large part to the dominance of RB Dalvin Cook. But as training camp approaches its conclusion, the Vikings are giving Cook some veteran help in the backfield.
On Monday, the Vikings made several roster moves, including the signing of veteran running back Ito Smith. In corresponding moves, they waived quarterback Danny Etling and placed rookie defensive end Janarius Robinson on injured reserve.
Ito Smith has played the last three seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. In three years in Atlanta he’s played in 35 games, totaling over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.
Smith joins a Vikings rushing attack that ranked fifth in yards and sixth in touchdowns in 2020. He may be relegated to third-down duties behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. And that’s if he makes the final 53-man roster.

The Minnesota Vikings had one of the NFL’s best offenses last year. They finished 11th in points and 4th in yards thanks to nearly 2,000 yards from scrimmage from Dalvin Cook.
But their bottom-10 defense was their Achilles’ heel. They gave up 475 points – third-most in franchise history – and finished just 7-9, missing the playoffs. It was only the second losing season with Mike Zimmer as head coach.
The Vikings have made moves in the offseason to address their defense though. Maybe it will be enough to get them over the hump and back into postseason contention.
