Washington president Jason Wright has been transparent about the team’s rebranding since taking office last summer. Wright has spoken numerous times this year about new names for the franchise. He even ruled out one popular choice.
In the most recent episode of “Making the Brand,” Wright discussed possible new nicknames with head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew. The names are redacted, but you get to hear Rivera’s take on the names.
Toward the end of the episode, Wright seemed to imply Washington was down to three choices. Rivera told Wright his choice. Wright liked it. That was it.
On Monday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post joined the “Grant and Danny” show on 106.7 The Fan and confirmed the list was down to three.
“At the start of camp, Jason Wright told us that the list had been narrowed and mainly because they wanted to announce it on their team website with this video,” Jhabvala said. “But he did say that they had narrowed the list and pretty significantly, too. And, yeah, we learned it’s down to three. After watching the video, I did confirm that, in fact, what they were going with at the end of the video when Jason Wright said, ‘so we’re going to put these three through.’ Yes. The list has been narrowed.”
There was no timetable given on a new name, but Wright said earlier this summer the name should be in place by early 2022.
One Twitter account, @RefTheDistrict, had some fun with the video on Monday, leading Wright to offer a hilarious response.
You’ll be hearing from our lawyers for confiscating the raw footage and using it without permission.
