The Washington Nationals are calling up Andres Chaparro and his job will be to mash against left handed pitching

The Washington Nationals have had big problems against left handed pitching. The teams recent series against the Rangers exposed those issues for all to see. Patrick Corbin went 8 innings of two run ball in game one of the series. In game three, opener Jacob Latz managed to go 3.1 innings while striking out 7. In response, Mike Rizzo decided to call up lefty masher Andres Chaparro.

The Nationals are calling up infielder Andrés Chaparro, per source.

After returning from an oblique injury, Chaparro hit .304 with a 1.025 OPS in 15 games with Rochester.

In the Minor Leagues, as well as his stint in the big leagues in 2024, the man they call Chappy has annihilated southpaws. After coming back from injuries, Chaparro has been putting up comical numbers against lefties in Rochester.

He is 9/16 with four homers and four doubles. That gives him a .563 average and a 2.111 OPS. Those are hysterical numbers. You have to give a guy that mashes like that a chance at the big league level. As fun as Nasim Nunez is, he can’t deliver that kind of value.

In 2024, Chaparro showed his skills against southpaws could translate to the big league level. He hit .300 vs lefties with a .978 OPS in 40 at bats. Those are some big time numbers and they show that Chaparro has a real big league skill.

That skill is one the Nationals can really use. Their left handed heavy lineup has struggled mightily against southpaws. On the season, they are hitting .228 with a .637 OPS vs lefties. Those are bottom of the barrel results that the Nationals need to change.

The offense has been sputtering in general the last week, hitting .183 with a .489 OPS. This is an offense in need of a spark, and Chaparro is capable of providing that. All of their 1b/DH types are better against right handed pitching.

Despite being a switch hitter, Josh Bell is a putrid 2/39 from the right side. He should not take anymore AB’s as a righty. Chaparro will now be the guy to DH vs left handed pitching. With the offense needing a spark, especially against lefties, Andres Chaparro is the type of pure slugger they could use.
