Nationals Make Key Infield Addition for the Upcoming Season

January 9, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Utilityman Amed Rosario has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals, per Mark Zcukerman of MASN Sports.

Nationals announce they’ve signed infielder Amed Rosario to a 1-year deal. 29-year-old batted .280 in 103 games with TB/LAD/CIN last season. Owns .703 OPS during 8-year career with 5 teams (mostly NYM/CLE). Seems like he’s replacement for Ildemaro Vargas.

Right-hander Joan Adon has been designated for assignment to create a spot on the roster. For Rosario, ‘s set to earn $2 million from this deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Meanwhile, Rosario, 29, joins his new team after a tumultuous 2024 season in which he played for three different clubs. He originally signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays but was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers mid-season. He finished the year with the Cincinnati Reds, who claimed him off waivers.

Now, Rosario brings his defensive flexibility and contact-driven bat to Washington, bolstering their roster ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Nationals Sign Amed Rosario to One-Year Deal

Rosario will provide a right-handed infield bat for the Nationals, something the club is currently missing. Rosario is a lifelong shortstop who tapped into more versatility with the Rays. He made starts at second base, third base and right field. The Dodgers eventually brought back Rosario at the trade deadline just as they did in 2023. The move came hours after the Dodgers added another utility player, Tommy Edman to its roster in a three-way trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Dodgers acquired Rosario at the deadline in 2023, trading him for then-struggling pitcher Noah Syndergaard. But Rosario batted only .256 with a .709 OPS over the remainder of the season. As a member of the Rays, Rosario was putting together one of his best big-league seasons.

Rosario broke into the majors with the New York Mets in 2017. He was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in January 2021 as part of a multiplayer package for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco.

Rosario is a lifetime .273 hitter with 63 home runs and 366 RBI in 942 games. He set career highs in 2023 with a .287 batting average, 15 home runs and 72 RBI with the Mets in 2019. He led the majors with nine triples in 2022 with Cleveland.
