Nationals Re-Sign Veteran Starter Trevor Williams

December 31, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Trevor Williams is staying in DC, re-signing with the Nationals for two years.

The Washington Nationals have re-signed veteran starter Trevor Williams to a two-year, $14 million contract, according to The Athletic’s Stephen J. Nesbitt. The 32-year-old starter went 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA over 13 starts in 2024. Williams missed some time due to a right flexor muscle strain. Williams previously signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals back in December 2022.

Report: Nationals Re-Sign Trevor Williams to Two-Year Deal

Williams now rejoins Washington’s rotation which includes veterans MacKenzie Gore and Jake Irvin, as well as 2024 rookies Mitchell Parker and DJ Herz. With Patrick Corbin no longer on the ballclub, these five are projected to be the main starters. The team also has some pitching depth that includes Cade Cavalli, Jackson Rutledge, and newest addition Michael Soroka.

Williams made 30 appearances in his first season with the Nationals in 2023, but went 6-10 with a 5.55 ERA. However, 2024 was a slight improvement for the veteran despite limited appearances due to the flexor muscle injury. Over two seasons in Washington, the 32-year-old went 12-11 with a 4.44 ERA in 43 starts.

Williams previously had stints with the New York Mets from 2021-2022, the Chicago Cubs very briefly in 2021, and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2016-2020. The right-hander was called up to the majors by the Pirates in September 2016. While in Pittsburgh, he started out as a reliever before eventually moving into the starting rotation. Williams then spent half of 2021 with the Cubs before being traded to the Mets in late July.

Williams was selected out of Arizona State University by the Miami Marlins in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut for the Gulf Coast Marlins and spent some time in Miami’s farm system. In October 2015, Williams was traded to the Pirates organization where he would make his major league debut the next season.
