Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner has tied an MLB record as he recorded his third career cycle. Turner notched a triple off of Michael Wacha in the sixth inning during Washington’s 15-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays to cap off the historic feat. With his third cycle, he has tied Adrian Beltre, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel, and John Reilly atop the all-time leaderboard. He is also the only active player with three cycles as he passed Brock Holt and Christian Yelich.
Trea Turner Notches His Third Career Cycle
After completing the cycle in 2021, Trea Turner has performed the feat every other year since 2017. Turner’s first cycle came at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies in 2017. In that game, Turner also needed a triple and recorded it in the 7th inning. Then, in 2019, Turner again cycled against the Rockies. This time, however, it was at Nationals Park. He needed a double in that game and recorded it in the 7th inning once again.
For Turner, he has a rare combination of power and speed, which makes him uniquely equipped to achieve the cycle. In his career, he has 31 triples and 89 home runs. He was tied for the league-lead in triples in 2020, with 4, and had a career-high, 8, in 2016.
After this four-for-four effort on his 28th birthday, Turner is now batting .310 on the season with 14 home runs and an NL-leading 18 stolen bases. While he was not named an all-star finalist by the fans, this cycle could bolster his already strong case for his first all-star appearance. Turner would have been named an all-star last season after a terrific season, where he led the league in hits, with 78, and hit 12 home runs, but the all-star game was canceled due to Covid-19.
At just 28-years old, Turner will have multiple opportunities in the future to record the historic fourth cycle.
