The Nats look to even the series against the best club in the National League, the Chicago Cubs
The Nationals look to bounce back after a rough 8-3 loss last night to the red-hot Chicago Cubs, who, after winning 3 in a row and 8 of their last 10, sit atop the National League with a 38-22 record. Starter Trevor Williams only made it 4 1⁄3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits with one walk. The bright spot for the Nationals last night was Luis Garcia Jr, who went 3-4 with 3 singles and a run batted in. Over his last 15 games, Garcia Jr. is hitting .333 with a .917 OPS, finally showing signs of life after a rough start to his 2025 campaign.
The Nats will be looking to even the series tonight behind their ace, MacKenzie Gore, who threw 6 scoreless frames with 8 strikeouts in his last start in Seattle. With a lefty on the mound in Matthew Boyd for the Cubs tonight, Tena, Ruiz, Garcia Jr, and Lile all hit the bench with Rosario, Call, Adams, and Nunez getting starts tonight. Although it’s a shame to see Garcia Jr. on the bench after a strong showing last night, it’s hard to argue with his .206 batting average and .354 OPS against lefties on the season.

The Cubs will roll out the same 9 starters tonight with a slightly altered lineup order, sliding Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch down against a lefty. Cubs star outfielder Kyle Tucker misses his second game of the series with a finger injury. On the mound for the Cubbies is 34 year old left hander Matthew Boyd, who has a 3.08 ERA on the season and threw 6 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his last start.
