Washington Nationals vs New York Mets game thread

Follow along as the Nationals look to take the series against the division leading Mets

What a wild game we witnessed yesterday and on our supposed day of rest, no less. My heartbeat definitely didn’t get the memo! This Nationals team has shown incredible growth since the start of the year, and in my mind, they’ve proven they can hang with anyone. Even on a day when Mitchell Parker didn’t have his best stuff, they still found a way to battle and come out on top.

Today, we’ll see a few changes to the lineup. Big man Josh Bell will get the day off, his third missed game of the season, with C.J. Wood sliding into the DH spot. That opens the door for Jacob Young to get back into action after his day off yesterday. Keibert Ruiz also returns to the lineup after getting a breather.

On the mound, it’ll be right-hander Trevor Williams. In his five starts this season, he has yet to record an out in the sixth inning, but he’s been steady. In his last outing, he allowed just one run on six hits. While Williams doesn’t tend to pitch deep into games, his last two starts have both been quality outings and the Nationals will look for another solid effort from him today.

As for the Mets, there’s a flurry of changes today. Jesse Winker steps in for Starling Marte at the DH spot, while catcher Francisco Alvarez returns to the lineup for just his third game of the season. In the outfield, Jeff McNeil, not exactly a fan favorite at the moment gets the start in center field, also marking his third appearance this season.

On the mound, the Mets will turn to Griffin Canning. Through 26 innings this year, Canning has posted a strong 3.13 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He’s riding some momentum as well, having won each of his last three starts.
