2021 New York Mets Week 10 In Review 6/7-6/13

Tuesday

Hoping to bounce back from his previous performance, David Peterson started off the week for the 2021 New York Mets against Bruce Zimmermann and the Baltimore Orioles. Once again, Peterson got the early lead off of a Pete Alonso two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Almost exactly like the previous week, Peterson blew it again, allowing three runs in the bottom of the second. It all went downhill from there, with Peterson unable to make it three innings with four earned runs. Robert Gsellman came in for relief and almost had the same night as Peterson, also allowing four earned runs. Jacob Barnes and Drew Smith also struggled, making it a night to forget on all fronts with the hitting being nonexistent as well. The final score was 10-3.

Wednesday

Taijuan Walker took the hill against former Met Matt Harvey for the second time this season. Walker looked great, going seven innings allowing just one earned run in his best start as a Met so far. Harvey was the complete opposite, imploding against his former team. He lasted just three innings with seven earned runs. His bullpen didn’t do much better, also allowing seven runs in their six innings of works. Nearly everyone in the lineup came through for the team, making up for the lackluster offense the previous night. The final score was 14-1.

Friday

It was a pitching duel on Friday night in Queens, with 2018 Cy Young winners Jacob deGrom and Blake Snell duking it out in the opening game of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. Jake was better than ever, allowing just one hit over six innings with 10 strikeouts. Not only that, he brought in two insurance runs that would prove to be very important, as the MVP chants were raining throughout the stadium. He did leave early with some discomfort in his arm that was described as “right flexor tendonitis”, but he’s played catch since then and all signs point to him being ready for his next start. Miguel Castro nearly blew the game allowing a two-run homer in the seventh, but the rest of the bullpen bailed him out to secure the victory. The final score was 3-2.

Saturday

Marcus Stroman faced off against Joe Musgrove to start off the weekend. Stroman continued his dominance that he’s shown all season, allowing just one earned run through 6.1 innings. Francisco Lindor also stayed hot with a two-run home run in the first inning. The bullpen got it done as they have all season, with Edwin Diaz securing his twelfth save of the season. With this win, the Mets officially won the series by a final score of 4-1.

Sunday

Joey Lucchesi looked to continue his streak of solid starts while also helping the team sweep San Diego on Sunday. Lucchesi did everything he needed to do in his five innings of work, allowing just one run and not making the bullpen overwork. The reason why the Mets lost this game wasn’t because of Joey or the hitting, it was because of the bullpen management. Jeurys Familia threw the most amount of pitches in his career, and as a result of that walked in a run with the bases loaded. Then, Luis Rojas brought in Jacob Barned who hadn’t pitched in nearly a week to face Fernando Tatis Jr. with the bases loaded. Unsurprisingly, Tatis hit a grand slam, blowing the game open. The Mets wouldn’t be able to come back, and San Diego won by a 7-3 final score.

Wrap Up

Despite some hiccups along the way, it was a positive week for the 2021 New York Mets. Jacob deGrom stayed dominant and seemingly avoided a potentially serious injury, and they won a series against one of the best teams in the game again. Luis Rojas’s bullpen moves on Sunday were questionable, but every manager makes mistakes and Rojas has done an amazing job with this team the whole season, so it’s hard for anyone to complain.
