Friday night’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and the San Francisco Giants (67-68) was in a word, UGLY, at least as far as Baltimore fans are concerned. Consider yourself lucky if you were either unwilling or unable to stay awake until 1:24 am, East Coast time, to watch the 15-8 loss by the Orioles. It did look like Baltimore would make a game of it, for a few innings at least, but the team morphed into the Little League Orioles in the later innings.
Kremer struggles
Starting pitcher Dean Kremer (9-10) did not look like the pitcher we have seen recently. He issued two walks and gave up a pair of singlesto see the Giants score a run before recording an out. A sac fly and two additional singles allowed the Giants to plate four runs in the first inning. Three singles with no outs became a pair of runs in the second. San Francisco tacked on a run in the third, marking the end of Kremer’s night. The Baltimore right hander finished with a line of 3.0 innings pitched, 7 runs given up on 9 hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout on 76 pitches (48 K’s). Kremer was ultimately tagged with the loss.
No help from the bullpen
Corbin Martin entered the game and in 2.0 innings gave up a pair of homeruns, a two-run shot to McCovey Cove by Dominic Smith in the fourth inning and a solo shot to left by Luis Matos in the fifth. Grant Wolfram gave up 5 runs, with only one earned, in the seventh and eighth innings. The Giants scored runs in seven of the eight innings they batted and Yennier Cano was the lone reliever to keep the off the scoreboard.
A nightmare on Willie Mays Plaza
The seventh inning was a debacle for the Orioles. Four San Francisco singles combined with three Baltimore errors to produce four runs. Jackson Holliday‘s fielding error with one out forfeited an out. Dylan Beavers committed a throwing error on a Rafael Devers single when his throw to the plate rainbowed up the third base line allowing a run to score. An additional run scored on the play when Willy Adames caught Wolfram not covering home while Alex Jackson retrieved Beavers’ throw. The embarassment continued when Emmanuel Rivera‘s throw to first skidded past Ryan Mountcastle at first base on what SHOULD have been the third out.
It wasn’t all bad
Mountcastle scored a run and knocked in four in a 3 for 5 night (2 doubles).
Jeremiah Jackson (1 for 4, 2 R) extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Coby Mayo hit his sixth homerun of the season in the eighth inning.
Rivera recorded a pair of RBI.
Holliday went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
To this writer Interim Manager Tony Mansolino was a bit dismissive about the loss when he said post-game that the Orioles “just couldn’t hold them down.”
The Orioles are 15 games below .500 for the first time since May 31st.
Hopefully the Orioles will present themselves better on National TV on Saturday.
