The Baltimore Orioles lost 4-3 to the Washington Nationals Wednesday night. The Baltimore ofense just didn’t get started in time to overcome an early deficit (they scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings).
Washington hit two homeruns in their half of the first inning and at that point it looked like deja vu all over again.
Starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano surrendered homeruns to James Wood and Josh Bell to stake the Nationals to a 3-0 lead. Sugano settled down after that, retiring the side in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings. His line for the night: 7.0 IP, 3 R, 5 H (2 HR), K, no-decision. Sugano threw 94 pitches (56 strikes) in the effort.
Gregory Soto (0-1) allowed a run on 1 hit and walked 1 in the eighth to take the loss.
Offensively, the Orioles scored two of their three runs via sacrifice flies but left 12 men on base and went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.
Adley Rutschman went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a walk.
Jordan Westburg went 1for 4 with a triple and a run scored.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Jackson Holliday went 2 for 3 with a run scored and 1 walk.
Tyler O’Neill (0 for 4, RBI) and Ramon Urias (0 for 2, RBI, BB) were the two batters with RBI sac flies.
Gunnar Henderson, Heston Kjerstad and Ryan Mountcastle each singled in the contest.
