The Baltimore Orioles completed a three game sweep of the Chicago White Sox (57-96) with their 3-1 win on Wednesday. The win keeps the Orioles slim hopes of a .500+ season alive and draws the White Sox closer to a 100+ loss season.
In what has been a common theme of late, Dylan Beavers homered for the second day in a row. Today’s homer was a two-run shot to right field in the fourth inning. Beavers finished the day 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.
Baltimore scored early on a Jeremiah Jackson (1 for 4) RBI single in the first inning. Gunnar Henderson singled and advanced to second on an error charged to Chicago’s left fielder Will Robertson on the play. Tyler O’Neill walked and both baserunners advanced a base on a successful double-steal prior to Jackson’s at bat.
The Orioles equaled a team record by stealing a total of seven bases in the game. Henderson, who stole three himself, went 2 for 5 while O’Neill stole two and Beavers and Jorge Mateo each stole one. Mateo went 2 for 4 and made a nice running catch in left centerfield on a Miguel Vargas ball in the sixth inning.
All of this was in support of starter Tyler Wells (2-0). During the game analyst Ben McDonald said you can count on “death, taxes and Tyler Wells’ fastball” and Wells delivered, throwing his four-seam fastball for 33% of his 89 pitches. Wells averaged 93 mph on the fastball and finished 6.0 innings by allowing a run on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts for his second consecutive quality start. The lone run came on a Mike Tauchman homerun leading off the fourth inning.
Interim Manager Tony Mansolino praised Wells’effort, “Another good one. It’s a guy that can throw any of his repertoire in any count, any spot. The pitchability is so good, so advanced in a lot of ways. In an era of catchers setting up middle and pitchers throwing just as hard as they can down the middle, Tyler Wells is a little bit of a throwback in how he pitches. He’s been really good so far.”
Wells earned the win with some assistance from the bullpen trio of Yaramil Hiraldo, Rico Garcia and Keegan Akin who combined to limit the Chi-Sox to one hit over the final three innings with two strikeouts with Akin earning his seventh save of ’25 over 60 appearances. Thirteen consecutive White Sox batters were retired from the end of the fourth inning until the end of the eighth.
The team will now head home for the final homestand (seven games) of the season.
