The Baltimore Orioles took a first inning lead, extended that lead in the third inning and utimately held onto the lead to secure a 7-5 win over the San Diego Padres (76-64) on Wednesday afternoon. The series sweep was Baltimore’s sixth in 2025. Despite the loss, their fourth in a row, the Padres remain firmly in the second NL Wild Card slot while the Orioles ponder what could have been for them.
There is a song that says “it never rains in Southern California”, well on this day it did rain; it rained baseballs. The Orioles hit a total of four longballs while San Diego hit a pair of their own. Six of Baltimore’s seven runs came via the homerun and three of the Pardres runs came that way as well.
Jackson Holliday led off the game with his 16th homerun of the year.
In the third inning the Orioloes went back-to-back-to back, it was the second time this season that the Orioles have done so. June 24th versus the Rangers was the first time this season that they went back-to-back-to back. Colton Cowser hit a three-run “Earl Weaver Special” before Coby Mayo and Alex Jackson each hit a solo shot. The homers were the only hit those three players recorded in the game.
For the record, Manny Machado (2-run) and Fernando Tatis Jr (solo) homered for the Padres.
The winning pitcher was starter Cade Povich (3-7) who pitched into the sixth inning, allowing the Machado homerun and then leaving with the bases loaded and no outs. Officially Povich allowed 4 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 3 strike outs over 5.0 innings.
Keegan Akin relieved Povich and allowed two inherited runners to score on a single and a groundball double play; he struck out Elias Diaz to end the sixrh inning and surrendered the Tatis Jr homerun in the seventh.
Shawn Dubin allowed a single to Ramon Laureano and struck out three in the eighth while Yennier Cano struck out two in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Laureano robbed Cowser of a second homerun with an over the wall catch in left field in the ninth.
Mason Miller pitched a slider exclusive, Immaculate Inning in the eighth, retiring Jeremiah Jackson, Ryan Mountcastle and Emmanuel Rivera.
J Jackson went 0 for 4 with a walk, ending his 13-game hitting streak.
The cross-country flight to Baltimore should be a happy one.
