The Baltimore Orioles routed the Colorado Rockies (27-77) 18-0 on Saturday at Camden Yards. The Birds produced the 18 runs on 18 hits. Even though the fifth inning was the only hitless frame, all that was missing was Casey Kasem. Every Oriole in the lineup, starters and pinch hitters alike, all twelve of them, recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run.
Seven of the eighteen hits went for extra bases; four doubles and three homeruns on the Baltimore side of the scorecard.
The game set the club record for the largest shutout win.
Saturday’s homerun hitters were Tyler O’Neill (2 run), Cedric Mullins (3 run) and Alex Jackson (solo).
Mullins Is 100/100
Mullins’ homerun to the flag court in the 4th inning was a milestone. The 350 foot blast was his 100th career homerun and put him in the company of Paul Blair and Brady Anderson as the only Orioles with 100 homeruns and 100 stolen bases.
Just as impressive as the homerun was the diving catch Mullins made on a Orlando Arcia fly ball in the third inning. Fans have grown accustomed to these types of catches from Mullins over the years but this one may have been a better fit if it occurred last Wednesday in Cleveland on Superman Night.
When asked about the catch, Rogers had this to say, “It was the best catch I’ve ever seen. I still have no words for you. It was unbelievable. I mean, just his night in general, 100 home runs with this club and what he means to this organization and this city. My hat’s off to him. Great teammate, great person. Best catch I’ve ever seen. It was unbelievable.”
A One-Hit Start
The game would not have been a shutout had it not been for the solid performance by starter Trevor Rogers (4-1). Making his eighth start of the season, Rogers tossed 7.0 innings of one-hit ball. He walked 1 and struck out 5 across a 96 pitch (65 K) outing. It was fourth consecutive quality start with all of them coming in the month of July. On the season Rogers have given the team six starts of at least 6.0 innings. The hit that he surrendered came off the bat of Thairo Estrada in the second inning. Rogers face just one batter over the minimum, thanks to a seventh inning double play, to record the well-deserved win.
The Bullpen Held Serve
Yaramil Hiraldo pitched a clean eighth while Kade Strowd gave up a lead-off single, walked 1 and struckout 2 in the ninth.
A 9-Run Seventh
Baltimore plated nine runs on eight hits in the seventh inning. Among the hits were a pair of doubles by Gunnar Henderson and a double by Coby Mayo, who pinch hit for Ramon Laureano and walked in his first plate appearance in the inning. A total of 13 Orioles came to bat in the seventh.
Offensive Highlights
Jackson Holliday, Henderson, Ryan O’Hearn, O’Neill and Mullins all had a multi-hit game.
Jordan Westburg, Henderson, Colton Cowser and O’Neill scored multiple runs.
Henderson, O”Hearn, Mayo, O’Neill and Mullins all had a multi-RBI game.
Illustrating just how difficult it is to advance in the 2025 Wild Card race, the Orioles remain 9.0 games back despite the convincing win.
Since momentum is only as good as the next day’s starter, it is up to Tomoyuki Sugano to build upon this win on Sunday.
