An Ambush Downtown

August 1, 2023 by Orioles Hangout

Oriole Park at Camden Yards put on it’s best face on Sunday night for the national ESPN audience. With 37,429 fans in attendance, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 9-3. It had been five years since the Orioles hosted an ESPN game and the Birds made the most of this opportunity. Striking quickly and with precision, Baltimore scored 7 runs in the first inning, stunning the Bronx Bombers and leaving Yankee starter Luis Severino looking dazed and confused.

Five hits and a walk led to six Baltimore runs before the Yankees recorded an out. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Anthony Santander (1 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and Ryan O’Hearn (2 for 5, 1 R, 3 RBI) gave the Orioles an early 3-0 lead and Adam Frazier‘s (1 for 4, 1 R, 3 RBI) 395 ft. 3-run homerun to the right field flag court pushed that lead to 6-0. Adley Rutschman (3 for 4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) hit a RBI single in his second at-bat of the inning to cap the scoring at a touchdown.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Dean Kremer gave the team a 4.0 inning start, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits (1 HR) while walking 2, striking out 7 and throwing a wild pitch. Four relievers were tagged into the game and combined to strike out 11 more Yankees. Mike Baumann (8-0) was credited with the win despite allowing an inherited runner to score; his line was 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 WP.

Shintaro Fujinami walked 1 and struck out 4 of the 8 batters he faced over 2.0 innings. He allowed 1 hit as well. Danny Coulombe (1.0 IP, 3 K) and Yennier Cano (1.0 IP, 3 K) recorded all of their outs via strikeout.
