Another Walk-Off Loss

July 4, 2022 by Orioles Hangout

Saturday’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Minnesota Twins ended on a Jose Miranda RBI single, giving the Twins a 4-3 walk-off win. Leading 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Orioles allowed a Jorge Polanco homerun to start the frame. A strikeout and a double followed, setting the stage for Miranda’s heroics.

Ironically, the Twins were victims of back to back walk-off losses at the hands of the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday and Thursday, prior to the series with the Orioles. Three teams, four consecutive walk-off games.

Tyler Nevin (1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB) started the Baltimore scoring with his double in the second inning that allowed Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 run scored, 1 BB) to cross the plate. Anthony Santander (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) added his 15th homerun of the season in the third and Jorge Mateo’s (0 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 BB) fourth inning sacrifice fly scored Rougned Odor (1 for 4, 1 run scored).

Santander also made a highlight-reel catch in the fourth inning.

The Orioles scoring gave starter Jordan Lyles a 3-0 lead. Lyles returned the favor with a quality start: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R (on a Nick Gordon homerun), 1 BB, 7 K. Dillon Tate (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R) relieved Lyles and Felix Bautista (1.0 IP, 2 K) then turned it over to Jorge Lopez (3-5).

Lopez blew the save and suffered the loss for the second consecutive game, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits (1 HR) with 1 strike out in one-third of an inning.

Trey Mancini (1 for 3) was hit by a pitch for the 8th time this season; this time in the right elbow/forearm area.
