Bel Air Police charged a group of teens with traffic violations and seized their bicycles after the group allegedly blocked traffic downtown last week.
Police were dispatched to the area of 13 N. Main St. on Thursday to respond to complaints of traffic hazards and a “large group of teens on bikes blocking the street.”
While officers were en route, dispatchers observed the teens on bikes, via surveillance footage, entering the Bel Air parking garage and heading to the rooftop, police said.
Officers detained eight students and had them call a parent or guardian so officers could request the teens be picked up, according to police.
Eight teens were charged with traffic violations and referred to the Department of Juvenile Services and their bikes — some of which were electronic — were seized by police and submitted into temporary police department custody, police said.
According to police, most of the teens involved were from outside the town of Bel Air.
“They obviously had to travel some distance to town on local roadways and some were operating E-bikes, which have the ability to travel at greater speeds than typical pedal-powered bicycles,” police said. “The Bel Air Police Department is sharing this incident with the community in order to educate not only juveniles, but also parents/guardians, motorists and cyclists.”
